AI Referral Traffic & Citation Visibility — Cross-Line

Dashboard 5 showed the threat from Google AI Overviews inside the SERP. This dashboard looks at the separate opportunity: standalone AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini sending referral traffic to your site. This traffic is small in volume today, but disproportionately high in intent and conversion quality — if your brand earns the citation.
AI referral traffic share
1.08%
Of all web traffic, growing roughly 1% per month.
ChatGPT conversion rate
15.9%
Roughly 5x higher than typical organic search conversion.
Claude growth rate
+153.5%
March 2026 month-on-month — fastest-growing AI platform.
Dark traffic estimate
20–40%
Of actual AI referrals likely invisible in GA4 and absorbed into Direct.
Small channel. Exceptionally high intent.
AI referral traffic is only 1.08% of all web traffic, but it converts at far higher rates than organic search because the user arrives after the AI has already done part of the comparison and synthesis work. In Indian insurance, that high-value citation layer still belongs overwhelmingly to PolicyBazaar and a handful of structured comparison publishers.
Panel 1A

AI referral traffic: platform share

ChatGPT dominates volume, but the long-term story is more nuanced: Perplexity punches above its size in research-heavy verticals, and Claude is tiny but growing fast.

Panel 1B

Conversion quality by channel

AI referrals are small, but they arrive later in the decision journey and convert disproportionately well.

The dark traffic problem

What GA4 measures is not the full AI picture. Mobile apps, privacy browsers, and inconsistent referrer headers push a meaningful share of AI traffic into Direct.
Dark traffic
Measured AI traffic ≠ actual AI influence. If GA4 shows 100 AI sessions, actual AI-influenced traffic may be closer to 125–165 sessions, with the balance hidden inside Direct traffic.
Measured AI traffic (60–80%)
Main sources of invisibility: ChatGPT mobile app referrer loss, Claude inconsistencies, privacy-browser stripping, and zero-click AI summaries that cite content without sending any visit.

GA4 setup reference — AI Search channel

Create a custom channel group in GA4 and move AI Search above Referral. This gives you the cleanest possible view of measurable AI referral traffic.

  1. Create a custom channel group in GA4.
  2. Add a new channel named AI Search using the regex above as the session source rule.
  3. Move the AI Search channel above Referral so these sessions are captured correctly.
